What is considered a normal period?

According to Chinese Medicine, a normal menstrual cycle typically begins around day 28, although a healthy cycle may vary between 26 and 34 days, provided it is regular each month. Ideally, the period should begin with a fresh red colour and present as a mild to moderate flow. Over the following few days, the flow typically becomes heavier, requiring a fresh menstrual product approximately every three hours. Towards the final day, the flow should gradually taper off, while remaining fresh red in colour.

Many women can believe that symptoms like period pains, bloating, breast tenderness, clotting, mood swings, or headaches are just a normal part of having their period. However, from a Chinese Medicine perspective, these experiences may suggest the need for deeper support. In practice, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be used to treat woman who experience premenstrual symptoms or irregularities in their cycle.

Treatment is guided by identifying patterns of imbalance unique to each individual. Alongside acupuncture and herbal medicine, attention is also given to diet and lifestyle factors that may be influencing menstrual function. This often includes guidance around nourishing meals, sleep quality, stress management and emotional wellbeing to support more sustainable, long-term outcomes.

Integrative Chinese medicine approach

In the clinic, Fraser frequently assists women across all ages presenting with a range of menstrual health concerns, including PMS, irregular cycles, amenorrhea, painful periods, heavy bleeding, endometriosis, and PMOS/PCOS. Combining the principles of Classical Chinese Medicine (CCM) with evidence-based research, each treatment plan incorporates a personalised combination of acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary and lifestyle advice.

Before your consultation

After booking your initial Chinese Medicine consultation, you will be provided with a comprehensive online pre-intake health form, which is completed prior to your appointment. This pre-intake form covers all aspects of your health, including current symptoms, menstrual history, past medical history, surgeries, medications, supplements, and any relevant information related to hormone or menstrual concerns. Fraser Cobham will review your health form prior to the consultation to gain a broad understanding of your unique needs and to establish the foundation of your treatment plan.

Your treatment

During your initial consultation, Fraser will ask additional clarifying questions to gain a deeper understanding of your hormonal health. Specific diagnostic techniques such as abdominal palpation, tongue diagnosis, and pulse assessment, may be used to refine your Chinese Medicine diagnosis. Based on the recommendations provided, you will receive acupuncture and/or a herbal formula. If necessary, additional blood tests may be recommended, particularly if underlying medical conditions are suspected.

Our focus:

  • Balanced hormones
  • Reduced pain
  • A regular menstrual cycle and flow
  • Minimal menstrual symptoms
  • Supporting overall health and well-being across each part of the cycle
At the conclusion of your initial treatment, Fraser will schedule a follow-up consultation and provide instructions if you have been prescribed a herbal formula or supplement. These follow-up appointments are essential for evaluating your progress and making any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan. During this phase, treatments may be spaced to fortnightly or monthly sessions when the cycle feel more regular and easeful. However, the frequency of treatments will be adapted to your individual needs and may vary depending on the complexity of your case.
