Digestive symptoms

It starts with your digestion

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views digestion as the cornerstone to good health and longevity. The efficiency of the Stomach, Spleen, Large Intestine and Small Intestine organs, and channels, are quintessential for sustaining vitality and a sense of inner wellbeing. In particular, the Spleen and Stomach belong to the Earth Element in TCM and are responsible for our rest and digest.

Digestive disorders are very common, and often have a dietary, lifestyle or stress related component. There can be a history of hormone imbalances, unbalanced lifestyle, chronic stress, inconsistencies in diet or repeated antibiotic use, which disrupt the delicate balance of the digestive system.

How do we tackle these issues?

In clinic, digestive disorders are primarily addressed with Chinese herbal formulas. Each formula is prescribed according to the individual symptoms, pulse and tongue diagnosis. Modification to the herbs are sometimes made during the course of treatment, depending on changes in symptoms and response to the herbal formula. For most cases, the initial treatment focus is aimed at calming the main symptom of concern, then a follow-up formula is given to stabilise the condition. Once digestion is regulated, a maintenance formula may be prescribed to prevent future relapses.

Chinese Medicine diet therapy

Chinese medicine diet therapy is a must for digestive related disorders. This relates to the types of foods we should emphasise or avoid, balancing the five flavours, and healthy eating habits. Each consideration will be given according to the individual’s body constitution and main symptoms of concern.
