What is considered a normal period?

What does Chinese medicine say about ‘normal’ menstruation? According to Chinese medicine, a normal period should begin on approximately day 28, although a cycle can vary from 26-32 days, as long as the cycle is regular each month. The period should begin as fresh red in colour whilst being a mild to moderate flow. Over the next few days, the period will become heavier, requiring a fresh menstrual sanitary product to be replaced every 3 hours or so. On the last day, the flow should begin to taper off but still fresh red in colour.

Although symptoms like menstrual pain, headaches, breast tenderness, clotting, bloating and mood changes are common before or during the period, they are not considered normal according to Chinese medicine. For this reason, Chinese herbs and acupuncture are used to target PMS and menstrual related symptoms and conditions. Often dietary and lifestyle changes are also considered, which includes changes in diet and food, regulation of sleep and reduction in stress and emotional imbalances.
